Published in Mesa, Arizona with Brighton Publishing LLC, Dr. Morton E. Tavel has crafted an informative and lengthy non-fiction self-help book; written from a physicians point of view, with regards to the consumers overall health. I rate Health, Tips, Myths and Tricks A Physicians Advice Health information to liberate us from “snake oil”, 2 out of 4 stars **. The title appears to be very long, and possibly if it were shorter the book would be more appealing to readers scrolling through prospective titles to read. For example, shortening the title to: “Health, Tips, Myths & Tricks: A Physician’s Advice”, flows better when reading the title aloud and it catches the interest of the eye quicker. Stating in the title that a doctor backs up the information collected, provides as a catalyst for legitimacy.
Poor editing is visible within the text due to the lack of simple modifying adjectives such as “the”, before a noun or pronoun; causing opportunities for the reader to get lost or stumble over a sentence because they are trying fill in the proper terms. According to the author, the book is in three sections; in which I believe the book would flow better if the ending chapters began the book, to give the reader a better understanding on possibly why the topics covered were selected and to present prerequisite information to understand the book in its entirety.
The language or tone of the book appears to be inconsistent throughout the text, when high caliber words such as gargantuan, dissemination and palatable are thrown into random simplified paragraphs. Repetition is also seen; for example: the word irradiation is seen six times in the first paragraph of chapter 46. Despite the need for further editing, the author tries to add humor at the end of each chapter to sound less authoritative.
Here is an ending chapter excerpt from the book, “Hopefully, I haven’t spoiled your entire day by advising against such yummy foods. But even if your day is less fun, your future has a chance to be much more secure and probably substantially longer”. The author ends every chapter in this fashion.
Dr. Morton E. Tavel covers a multitude of categories regarding educating an individual about the pros and cons of their lives as it is in the present, but he also shows what changes can be made if proper time and effort is put in. A few must read chapters cover:
weight loss,
good eating habits,
vitamin intake,
benefits of chocolate,
hypertension,
arsenic levels in foods,
electronic cigarettes versus tobacco cigarettes,
as well as several other intriguing topics.
