Aluria
Jason Conner had a hard life. His family owned the richest company in Canton. He never got to have a proper teen life and now he was faced with problems that no one of his age should have to deal with, problems he would rather not think about. His only haven was his girl, his sweet love Tessa. So when a mysterious storm hit Canton, and the dark magic behind it threatened to destroy the one he cared for the most, Jason didn't pause to think. Her life was more important than his. But a sacrifice so precious is not to go unnoticed. Thus awakened Aluria, a powerful and mysterious entity…And now Jason has a chance to protect all he cares for from the darkness stirring within Canton.
The author Terry Cook introduces to us a new superhero through a gripping tale of action, adventure and love. I believe the story he actually wanted to convey was a great one, with a nice twist that would have kept you turning the pages. I liked the way he kept certain crucial parts of the story in suspense until introducing them unexpectedly. But the words in which he tried to portray this has left a lot unexpressed.
I was especially disappointed with the scene and character development. As the story moves on, the basic behavior of the protagonist keeps on changing so rapidly that it becomes impossible for a reader to relate to him (he is playful one instant, serious in the next; too naïve once, too sharp the next.) The portrayal of the critical scenes and the expression of the feelings of the characters are also unrealistic. For example, the absolute adoration that Jason felt towards Tessa; his perception of her as an absolute angel is a complete damper to a good story. The villain could also have been better portrayed. There is also the fact that some of the episodes and dialogues and many of the characters’ traits were complete clichés. The fantasy element and the twists are pretty good and could have made the work a gripping page-turner, if only they were a bit better expressed.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The two stars are solely for the core plot that got veiled by the mistakes. There are only a few proofreading errors. It lost the two stars due to the overall unrealistic feel of the narration. It is still an acceptable read for those who cares only for its fantasy element.
