This book, Memoir of a Deserter by Thomas Foster, was a very intriguing read for me. It centres on the life of Thomas Foster, beginning from his personal struggles and the impact of the 9/11 situation on his life, down to his decision to join the army. He talks about his experience in the army and much more. It’s a compelling read that explores how a young man grapples with his sense of duty, the expectations society places upon him, and his powerful need to live a life that feels real and true to himself. This isn't just a war story; it's a personal quest of transformation.

The author tells us his experience from his life in the army, and he bravely brings to light the often-harsh realities of military life. He offered a raw and firsthand view of what operations in the military look like. He also shows the moral dilemmas and the difficult realities the soldiers faced, especially when they were taking over homes of Iraqi civilians. It's amazing how the narrative takes a fascinating turn as he builds a new life as a kayak tour guide in Vieques, Puerto Rico, immersing himself in nature and community.

What I like about this book is how the writer vividly describes the intensity of combat zones and how he made the book so lively and relatable that sometimes I'll feel like I am actually there with him. I love the writer's writing style; it's really engrossing. I love how he could put the story together in a very well-arranged and interesting manner. I have no dislike for this book. I found no errors in the book; this shows the book was professionally edited.

Overall, Memoir of a deserter is very educational, It lets us know more about history. It's also a good book for anyone interested in stories of self-discovery, resilience, and pursuit of a meaningful existence amidst adversity. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of the various reasons I have stated in the previous paragraphs.
