Toni the Superhero is a wonderful children’s book written by R.D. Base for early readers. This book is full of simple sentences to help young readers learn how to read. A lot of the words are repetitious, so young children could build their confidence in reading by recognizing some of the same words over and over again. This is a very clever way to introduce little ones to sight words and allow them to see that reading can be fun.

This story is about a sweet little boy named Toni with special superpowers. Toni is a very heroic little fellow doing everyday things. This superhero has many outstanding character traits that young readers can learn to possess. In this story, you will find that Toni’s character is fun, smart, helpful, creative, courageous, and talented.

By now, I’m sure you are wondering where exactly does the superhero part come in at. Well, this is not a typical superhero and villain story, but Toni does save the day. This is more like a story to help children understand that superheroes can come in all sizes. True heroes are those that are helpful and kind to others.

The author and illustrator do a great job collaborating the story with the pictures. The illustration in this book really grabs the attention of young readers with its detailed, bright, and colorful pictures. All of the super things that Toni did are in the pictures. Little readers can utilize these text features to help them understand what Toni is doing as he is doing it. I think the moral of the story is to teach young readers how to read as well as showing them that being helpful makes them a hero.

Toni the Superhero is a great picture book for early readers just learning to read. The book focuses on allowing young readers to understand and comprehend exactly what the book is about and what the character is doing. This can be engaging for the whole family since all of the things that he does can be mimicked while reading the story. This combination also allows children the ability to read to self. Early literacy skills are very important at this age and children are able to retell this story in their own little way. I foresee that Toni may one day become a Children’s classic.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is simple enough for young readers to read without getting overwhelmed. The book is 30 colorful pages filled with more pictures than words, so young readers could learn to read. I wished the author would have put a list of the sight words used in the story in the back of the book as a cut-out. This way parents could help young readers master those words, which we all use so often. I recommend purchasing this book to every household with children under 5 years old.
