Sometimes there comes along a very sensible book, full of advice and tips for all of us who are mindful of the state of our health. Dr. Morton E. Tavel M.D., a medical specialist in the field of internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases wrote Health Tips, Myths, And Tricks in view of this. The book is likewise aimed at making us aware of the many scams proliferating now in the market, designed for conning us into spending so much on unverified “cures” and regimens of wellness.

Dr. Tavel made mention of the subjects most people have an inkling about, but could not have it from good authority. For instance, it is always said by mothers that it counts to have a good breakfast. Right? Or is it wrong? How about the much-debated benefits or harm due to coffee? Does consumption of fish nowadays outweigh the dangers of ingesting excessive metal in favor of the Omega 3 that could be derived therefrom? Processed foods, how deadly are they? Red meat, should you curtail it from your diet? And many more topics of interest are given attention, vis a vis the research and studies regarding them, e.g., transfat, cigarette smoke, junk food, chocolates, and olive oil to name a few. You have to discover the rest for yourself.

What I like most about this book is the straightforward way Dr. Tavel deals with the subject. He did not mince words when exposing all these. Perhaps, that is due to the backing he obtained from medical studies and research. He has written some of these in national medical journals himself. And the expertise he has acquired from numerous years of medical practice makes him a veritable buster of the “myths” and superstition relating to ignorance and little learning that might had clouded our perception of health issues.

Of the 62 chapters that comprised the book, Dr. Tavel relegated a considerable bulk of these to his exposé concerning everyday habits of people, among which the most notable are consuming “bottled water” which is not necessary for the reason that “tap” water is just as good; the consumption of “detoxifying” substances which is not practicable because the body detoxifies itself; the belief that the common cold medications are “cures” when such are simply “painkillers” for a headache. There are so many more interesting topics worth debating upon.

This book is rightly a reference book, for serious reading, but could also be read for enjoyment if you want to be amazed by the medical facts presented. I give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars and recommend the same to students of the medical profession, and to everyone who wishes to have guidance in his effort towards well-being.
