Toni the Superhero; written by R. D. Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke, is a fun and well illustrated picture book for young readers. With three young boys of her own, and an avid reader herself, R. D. Base is very qualified to write children’s fiction.

What children can learn from the book
R. D. Base introduces young readers to Toni, a boy and superhero. However, what makes Toni amazing is not just his superhero powers. The author helps the readers meet the superhero as a boy, telling us his hobbies and the things he enjoys doing for fun. This is a great book to help young readers learn a lot of verbs, especially given that they likely enjoy doing some of the things that Toni the Superhero enjoys as well.

The Illustration
As can be expected of well-illustrated books, the thirty-page book is very colourful. I’m not usually a big fan of picture books but the colours in this book were very catchy; inspiring happiness and excitement at the warm summer colours used to illustrate the text. However, it is not just colour that sets the illustrations in this book apart. The illustrations all depict what the author writes about perfectly by not only giving illustration to the words but even further meaning can be gotten from them. That is, young readers read the words and ‘read’ the illustrations as well.

Why young readers should read it
I would highly recommend this book for young readers, not only for the text and the beautiful pictures. I recommend it for the subtle lessons the book teaches with words and colour. For instance, one of Toni’s hobbies is that he likes to eat. The accompanying picture shows Toni with a plate of vegetables and fruits. With the relentless struggle parents face, getting their children to eat their veggies, this would be a more subtle and fun way of encouraging that.

Speaking more on subtlety, Toni the Superhero’s hobbies not only include fun things that all young children love to do, but also the things that help build character in a child, like helping around the house. Toni the Superhero is a fun and great way to encourage young children to begin reading. This book is perfect for young children who are having a hard time with reading because it is fun and educational without being too serious. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
