And Then I Met Margaret: Stories of Ordinary Gurus I've Met by Rob White, is a creation of nonfiction about the ups and downs along life's journey and the extraordinary people that help you to endure and enlighten you along the way.
The author, Rob White, had been very financially successful. He started out as a school teacher, then a profitable real estate entrepreneur, and finally an adventuresome restaurateur. But despite all his materialistic accomplishments, he still felt a spiritual void. He started out on a quest to achieve spiritual insight. White traveled almost all over the world to listen to and speak with various well known and celebrated motivational speakers and philosophers gaining knowledge about life. And then... he met Margaret, a brazen second grader that with one question, turned his world upside down. Along with other 'unexpected gurus' in his life, White introduces readers to the numerous extraordinary people that helped him to learn about life and how to understand himself.
White tells of his growing up in a modest small town where your future possibilities were limited. He speaks of having to learn that life's opportunities are limitless. There are 21 chapters in the book he uses to explain how he learned his life lessons. Each chapter starts off with a myth that White once believed. By the end of the chapter, he disproves this myth and replaces it with an insightful 'truth'. It is these truths that have helped him to overcome his spiritual emptiness. He wants to share his discoveries with the reader, so they too can learn to acknowledge the remarkable people in their lives that may have offered them insight.
This was an inspiring work of literature. I liked that White wrote each chapter in a way that allowed the reader to feel as if they were a part of his life. Reading this book was like reading a novel based off of someone's memoirs. It's as if you're in a time machine seeing someone else's life through their eyes. There's no steps to follow. Just life lessons anyone can learn. There wasn't anything that I didn't like about this book. I really took pleasure in reading every chapter. As I read each chapter, I was eager to read the next. Sometimes you'd get a good laugh from some of the situations White had experienced. This can help readers see that it's okay to laugh at yourself.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to anyone who questions their future and needs some encouragement. Not only was this literary work very helpful, it was also entertaining. I look forward to reading other narratives by White.
