Sigfried is an interesting little boy and when I started reading Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! I thought I would be reading about his smelly socks. But boy, did I not get more than I bargained for? Because I ended up reading about rotten bananas, dog pee, messy uncles and his baby sister’s stained diapers. I am surprised I got to the end of the book without puking.

Illustrated and written by Len Foley, Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! is a relatively good Children’s Fiction book that can appeal to – or disgust – young children everywhere. The book is most suitable for children between the ages of 5 and 12. This includes children who have just started reading; those who are starting to read longer books; as well as young girls and boys looking to expand their English vocabulary.

I loved the illustrations throughout the book. They are funny and a great way to keep a child’s attention until the end. They portray everyday items that children are used to seeing around the house and do a good job of showing Sigfried’s family and overall way of life.

I enjoyed how interactive the book is. It asks questions, which is a good way to engage the child reading. Also, it is written in the first person, so children will feel like they are a part of the book as they are reading. The structure of the book is also flexible. So, parents can choose to read it to their children as a bedtime story or let them read it on their own.

Perhaps the biggest mistake I made was to read this book while eating. It ruined my appetite and I found it hard to get to the end. Fortunately for me, it is only 27 pages long so my misery came to an end quite quickly.

I rate the book 2 out of 4 stars. Although the book is well written, well-illustrated, and could possibly appeal to a great number of people, it wasn’t to my liking. I don’t give it a 1 because I think it can be used to encourage young children to clean up after themselves. It doesn’t get a 3 because it was disgusting to read, and I didn’t enjoy the ending.

So, for those with weak stomachs, read the book at your own risk. While you are at it, I will be washing my socks and cleaning my room!

That is quite true. I didn't consider it from that viewpoint. Thank you for commenting :)

I've heard good things about the illustrations in the book but you have a point.:D A lot of nose-wrinkling from all the smelly stuff. Great review.
Dream up something wild and improbable.

It is a great book for the young ones overall. And after reading some of the reviews I realise that I might have been a little too harsh on the poor book. :D Thank you for your comment!
