Illustrated Short Fiction by William H. Coles
This is a book full of well thought out fictive stories to entertain you for hours. In this book you will find stories with a sad ending, stories with a happy ending, humorous stories and stories that touch your heart. With every short story the author succeed in capturing one's attention, to keep you reading until the end. Every character is unique and with only few words one can easily see which type of person it is.
The Gift is a example of a story with a happy ending. Despite the hard time Catherine had, she was determent and walked out stronger on the other side. Suchin's Escape is a story that will keep your heart aching for the poor girl that need love and protection. In Clouds you will find a mother with a broken heart that only want the best for her little boy. The Stonecutter teach us to see the good in people even if they done wrong in your eyes. Ernest Goings and Hester learned a valuable lesson in The Thirteen Nudes of Ernest Goings. Lust is not love and young girls can be very naive sometimes.
All illustrations portray the stories well. The only thing I personally didn't like about this book is the two graphic novels. It was like reading a comic book (something I do not enjoy). The fact that the graphics does not give anything away about the story that follows, makes the illustrations much more appreciated.
Illustrated Short Fiction has a lot of stories where you can feel the hurt and betrayal that the characters experience. William H. Coles chose the words so well that one can feel the anxiety of a little girl or the anger of a betrayed woman. Reaching the end of some stories you wish there was more. The endings leave you wondering what would have happened next. Would the man find love again? Would the world's smallest woman find happiness and get her own family? All these questions remains after reading the stories, giving your imagination the opportunity to run wild.
If you are a fan of fiction that keep your mind occupied, this is the book for you. People seeking humorous stories only should not even bother to read this book, as Illustrated Short Fiction has a lot of deeper and meaningful stories. “I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars,” because of the entertainment and the stories touched my heart. Why don't you give it a try?
