R.D. Base did a fantastic job with this children's book. The vivid and colorful pictures are great for grabbing and maintaining the attention of young children. Superheroes are universally loved and Toni, the main character in this short story, is no exception. With his red cape, positive attitude and helpful demeanor, boys and girls alike will instantly connect with this awesome super boy hero.

Toni does not necessarily go on the expected superhero outings, like defeating bad guys or stopping run away trains, but he does do some super cool things, like helping with the chores or eating a healthy, balanced meal. The most important thing for Toni to do is to help the audience learn how to read. And to be a great superhero, of course.

This book is short and sweet. It is intended to help new readers build the foundation for reading with repetitive word usage and easy sentence structure. Even with very little assistance, a child can thoroughly enjoy reading about Toni and his wonderful, every day, escapades. Because of its simple sentences, bright illustrations, and child friendly concepts, its a book that your little one will want to divulge in time and time again. Every time they decide to open Toni the Superhero, they will have the assurance they will be able to read the book themselves. This is an important milestone of validation for any beginning reader.

It is important to understand, Toni the Superhero is not targeted to the advance reader. This book is strictly for the youngest of readers who have little to no knowledge or experience with written language. The sentences are composed of only three to four simple words, complementing the picture, so that even if the child can not actually “read” the words, they can still follow along with what is happening, essentially "reading" each page. Every sentence starts “Toni likes”, so that the young reader can begin to recognize the relationship between spoken and written words. This is a tremendous attribute. It provides the novice reader with consistency which assists in building the confidence to continue reading.

Whether flipping through the pages alone, or parent and child reading together, Toni the Superhero will keep kids entertained and excited to read, which merits a 4 out of 4 star rating. There is great potential in what Toni can accomplish in subsequent books. His future looks promising and I am excited to read his next adventure with my own little superhero.
