Finding true happiness at work and in relationships is probably the pursuit of every individual. But are we willing to achieve this dream? Jody B. Miller in her book From Drift to Shift challenges us, for example, she asks; “Will you be like the masses and do nothing about it? Just go on with your life, saying, it’s fine, it’s fine. Or will you bet it all on black, go blindly into the darkness and seek a more fulfilling existence, regardless of the payoff?” This book focuses on change whether good or bad and how it compels you towards finding your true purpose.

Uncontrollable circumstances’ come to life, whether invited or not, as it did with the characters in this book. Although some of these individuals found themselves in broken homes, some fighting terminal health conditions, others bouts of depression, two in unthinkable accidents that left them paraplegic and so on, they all somehow managed to rise above their situations and calamities and went on to lead successful lives.

From Drift to Shift is a book that inspires one to embrace change, follow the signs and seek happiness in all areas of life. According to Jody, pain, suffering, and dissatisfaction, should compel one forward and not backward. Although it’s a short book, the stories of different individuals and what they went through and how they overcame their hurdles makes this book a good read. Also, the fact this book is published in 2017 makes the message relatable and applicable.

From Drift to Shift is a nonfiction book, written in the first person as the author narrates her own story and in the second person as she narrates the stories of others. The emotions, the struggle and the strength of these characters grab you throughout the book, thus stirring you to soul search and take a deeper look at life, career, relationships, and choices.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because although I found it inspiring, some stories left me feeling quite depressed and one particular story somehow did not relate to the plot and the message of the book. Notwithstanding the book is an amazing read and I am recommending it to all who find themselves at a crossroad in life and have a desire to succeed against all odds. However, if you are looking for a quick fix for a problem this book will probably not work for you as it is a whole process.
