Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel is a book that offers advice about some of the contemporary issues affecting the health sector. The content of the book matches the title. The author understands that health issues are very broad thus chooses to dwell on some of the contemporary issues in the sector. The book provides the reader with all the information that he/she needs to know when choosing different types of remedies for various health issues.

The book is divided into three sections. In the first section, the author provides useful information about how to stay healthy. The second section explores some of the common myths about health. The third section informs the reader about some of the common methods used by entrepreneurs in the health sector to woe people into buying their products. He warns readers about the false information provided through mainstream media channels. He urges people not to believe everything that they see on media channels especially concerning drugs and health.

The author backs his points with examples. This enables the reader to have a better understanding of the content of the book. He has done thorough research on his content. He cites research studies that are relevant to the subject. In addition, he uses recent research studies that provide authenticity for his content. In some instances, he boldly disagrees with the findings and recommendations of other physicians backing up his points with scientific information. This is commendable.

In every chapter, the author seeks to educate the reader about a given issue. His experience and expertise in the health sector enable him to tackle every aspect of the book with authority. I think the author believes that food plays a major role in the well-being of an individual. He discusses several food-related aspects such as artificial sweeteners (Aspartame-Nutrasweet, Saccharin, and sucralose), vitamins and their dietary supplements, arsenic in food products, chocolate, coffee, and green tea among others. The relationship between the food we eat and health comes out clearly in this book.

Overall, I give the book 4 out of 4 stars. The author is bold when making conclusions about the issues he has addressed in the book. He has highlighted most of the misconceptions about health and fitness. He also gives his advice about dealing with the issues that he has discussed in the book. This information is very valuable especially in this era where many pharmaceutical companies are out to make money at the expense of the health of the people. This book is a rich source of information for every person who wants to have a healthy lifestyle.

I like how you discussed the way the sections of the book are laid out. That is something I did not do in my first review.

This is a really detailed and thorough review--thank you for writing it! :D I must say I don't read a lot of non-fiction on health and its related topics, but this book seems as good a place as any to start :)

Thank you for the detailed review. I had read another review of this same book where the reviewer had described the author's work as one-sided. I am glad to know that the facts presented are actually backed by research and I am reconsidering reading this book.

Great review! I read the book as well, and agree that Tavel emphasizes the value of a healthy diet. One thing that did surprise me was that he believes artificial sweeteners are relatively safe to consume. I was always under the impression that they were dangerous.

Great points you make in the review!

Thank you for your comment, Stephanie. About the artificial sweeteners, I believe that they are dangerous and I always advise people to stay away from them. I am a food scientist by profession and some of the things my university professors taught me have stuck with me, e.g. close to 99% of all artificial sweeteners are potential carcinogens.
