[Following is a volunteer review of "Unexpected Lessons From Professor Higgins" by Patti Smith.]
Title: "A Mixed Bag of Inspiration and Structural Flaws"
Summary
Unexpected Lessons from Professor Higgins is a story of various struggles faced while raising a child with a disability. This story is particularly inspiring to people to fight any problems that life may through at you with a positive attitude. A
What I Liked:
1. The book inspires people to be themselves, like in chapter 10 when Chris sang even though no one liked it. It helps us accept the different flaws others might have.
2. The author’s struggle throughout the story explains how life will throw difficulties at you. You must learn to be brave and face them. Life presents various obstacles; our response to these challenges defines our journey.
3. From the start of the story till its end, the author showered love and care on Chris. This tells us that everyone deserves love and understanding in this world.
Showing kindness to everyone around us is the most important part of being a human being.
What I Disliked:
1. The structure of the story is not well thought out. The time jump in Chapter 3 and other places makes the reader lose connection to the story.
2. Phrases like “proffering my sincere thanks in halting speech” feel unnatural. The reader will get tired of these over-complicated words when it is not necessary.
3. The “letting go” motive recurs excessively (Chapters 5–8) without fresh insights. This theme is repeated throughout the book and will become less interesting as the reader goes through the book.
To conclude this review, I would like to add that I loved reading this book. Additionally, it helped me to look at life with much more appreciation. The author manages to create a narrative that reminds us of our ability to turn life's unforeseen difficulties into chances for development.
