Toni the Superhero
My rating would be a 4 out of 4 stars. I gave this rating because it was engaging with colorful illustrations and was relatable to young children. My 2 and 4 year olds followed along with the words as I read. My 4 year old read most of the words and learned some new words as well. This is great for learning to read. They enjoyed it as much as I did reading it. My 4 year old read it after I read it to both of them and she picked up majority of the words.
I have 3 girls so the boy superhero plays more towards a male child and was not as engaging to my female children. They still found the activities that the superhero encounters very relatable. They seemed to enjoy the activities and having the mother in the pictures related to their family. The activities on each page are relatable to any preschool aged child.
Each page was colorful and had an energy about it that was fun and creative. It can be easily read and understood by an age group just beginning to read. The pages had just enough words for learning easily and one sentence was plenty for a beginning reader. Not overwhelming and when they could not read a word I read it and they learned a new word. The sentence was just enough for them to remember words and be able to use that with future recognition.
I would say its target age group would be ages 0-5 preschool aged children. Beginning self-readers and non self-readers. The sentences are short with a few easy reader words. Children that cannot read will easily be able to follow along and understand the illustrations.
It might have been my PDF copy but the pages showed up wrong. The page with the boy rescuing a cat from the tree was on the same page as him reading, with an empty tree on the next page. The page that “Toni likes to jump” had only yard toys without him present on that page. The page with him dusting shows him dusting and the next page has a picture of a blank room and the sentence “Toni likes to dust.” with no picture of Toni. I found that the errors are probably due to the format of my download and probably not the author’s fault, however it was a bit hard to follow along. It took my kids some adjusting to understand those pages.
The reasoning of the 4 out of 4 stars was because it was a well written and illustrated book that engaged my children and allowed them to read and learn words. They will be able to read this book again with ease, be able to recognize words, and enjoy the illustrations and story as a whole.
