King the horse hogs up all the shelter during a storm. The other barn animals are left in the rain, cold and shivering. They become angry, but a wise old owl shows them how to properly deal with their anger. They listen and soon discover that King isn’t as bad as he seems and the real reason he was hogging the shelter.

The overall theme of The Barnyard Buddies S.T.O.P. For Peace is the proper way to deal with anger. This is a great kids book showing them how to deal with their anger instead of acting on it. While it is written for children, it is a nice reminder for anybody. The author focuses on self control as opposed to irrational actions. She uses the S.T.O.P. technique, which stands for Stop and breathe, Tell how you feel, Open your mind, and Plan a deal. The author, Julie Penshorn, shows a true passion for creating a peaceful future for society and that passion is captured in this book.

The lyrical quality used is reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and really pulls the reader in. She uses slightly more challenging words, such as “sunbathing” and “complaining”. These words challenge young minds and allow for a greater vocabulary in the future. Penshorn also uses words that are easier for children to understand, such as “warm”. The steps of the S.T.O.P process are in a different color than the rest of the text. The dialogue bubbles are also in different colors for each character. The color changes allow for easy focusing throughout the story.

There is a parent and educator guide included in this book. The guide helps incorporate the lesson from this book into everyday life. The plan includes activities, questions, a song and even instructions for a mentor group. Penshorn gives all the tools needed to successfully make the S.T.O.P technique a part of your life.

I give The Barnyard Buddies S.T.O.P. For Peace by Julie Penshorn 4 out of 4 stars. It is a fantastically written and illustrated book that will keep children entertained while teaching them more calming ways of dealing with their anger. While this book is geared towards kids, the message is one that even adults can benefit from. The author includes everything that is needed to successfully teach this process to younger generations. I recommend this book to everyone. It will remind you that rationality is better than solving problems physically.
