[Following is a volunteer review of "Unholy Alliance" by Tyler Chase and Laura J. Quinn.]
Unholy Alliance, written by Tyler Chase and Laura J. Quinn, is a well-written tapestry of adventure, conflict, intrigue, and love.
Having a strong, fiercely loyal, intelligent and kind female protagonist such as Vaush makes for a dynamic and multi-layered story. The pairing of Vaush and Comran, who is equally strong and determined, allows us as readers to follow along with them on their journey as they move forward through the stages of being enemies to becoming partners fighting for survival and then finally to lovers. On this journey, we get to explore dysfunctional families, mental illness, the grief and heartbreak of love lost, and the downfalls of being consumed by power, greed, hatred and envy.
The interplanetary setting and the extraterrestrial Murkundahls, along with their fighting ships, telepathy, other-worldly talents and weapons, engage the imagination and add excitement. The battling among the different Houses and Kingdoms warring for power brings scheming, intrigue, betrayal and hatred to the storyline and keeps us wondering how Vaush and Comran are going to survive through all of the obstacles and ascend to power.
This story is so engaging, well-written and well-edited that I am giving it a rating of 5 out of 5. One of its strengths is the character development. As a reader you really get to know Comran and Vaush, making it easy to root for them, worry about them, and fear for them. The dialogue among characters flows naturally and the action is fast-paced, well-choreographed and INTENSE! The setting is fascinating and the love story is passionate. It has everything I look for in a story; upon finishing it I felt completely satisfied.
All in all, this book kept me thoroughly immersed and on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it was all going to play out. I am excited to start reading Book 2 and continue on with the adventure!
