L. Andrew Cooper’s gripping horror/dark fantasy series The Middle Reaches (Episodes 1-8), is a creepy, atmospheric horror adventure/philosophical mystery set in and around the Middle Reaches, home of the mysterious Sheldon Vere (Nick, Ambrose, Celia, Leslie, Pedro). The book is set in a dystopian world full of bizarre creatures and possessed creatures, and seems as though reality and desire are blurred in disturbing ways.

Cooper’s writing is creepy and grotesque and provides a well-written narrative that creates an atmosphere that is chilling and almost ineffable. That it’s broken into two parts makes it easier to read. It’s not as long or as long as other books or novels that are serialized. I did like the idea that there was always something new happening so I didn’t get bored.

Characterization is a strong point, with each protagonist feeling distinct and well-developed. However, some critiques note that character growth in the first eight episodes is somewhat limited. The themes explored—trauma, loss, and the boundaries of human desire—add psychological depth, making it more than just a supernatural thriller.

Overall, the novel is not recommended for non-readers (though I suppose that being a heavy-handed, dark novel does kind of mesh well with the plot and the dark atmosphere).

I’d say that overall, The Middle Reaches is an interesting and gripping horror experience. Cooper puts psychological tension and dark fantasy into an episode-based narrative that develops nicely, and I can’t wait for the next installment.
