A young man, Jason Conner, smitten by a girl Tessa, is faced with a supernatural evil force, in the form of Raiz. In his selfless attempt to protect his sweetheart, he unknowingly developed a strong mental connection with Aluria, a good spirit. Henceforth, they opened up communication through a mind meld. Jason-Aluria eventually leaves Canton, his birth city, for ten years in the hope to come back one day, stronger and wiser to defeat the evils of the city.
The story unveils a world of hope, love, pain and sacrifice, where hope is definitely the key element. It reminds us of the superhero Batman or even Superman with the very vivid description of the sophisticated gadgets and a sanctum. Jason is at the same time rich, young, full of hope and vigor. He is also the sole heir of the Conner Estate and Conner Incorporated. Thus, the story intertwines around a déjà-vu but with a more refreshing setting which was enjoyable. We also get introduced to a caring estate manager, Bonnie, who is motherly and comely. However, the other subordinating characters lacked description and sometimes they would not really come to life through the words. Nevertheless, Jason-Aluria's character and actions were breathtaking and it was a good read.
Aluria's character, though in spirit form is intriguing and we sometimes get a whiff of the anger of the creature when the power takes over Jason. Moreover, the transformation of Jason into a fearless flying creature was well characterized along with Raiz's supernatural powers. Similarly, Raiz's force and evil plots description were intricate, although the story plot was somewhat foreseen. The twists in the final battle between the protagonists were also captivating. Finally the epilogue leaves the reader in anticipation for the next book in the series.
This is definitely a superhero science-fiction type of book and those who like reading about supernatural heroes should have a go for this one. It is tailor-made in a simple but yet interesting way. The author ultimately shows vivid imagination and passion for superheroes and transmits these emotions to the reader.
Although the story was very well condensed in a nice format, a few grammatical mistakes were spotted and the branching characters lack adequate description, and thus, I would rate this book 3 out of 4. The younger population who love marvels should reach for this. It will definitely become a favorite and would not be surprising to find a similar superhero on the big screens someday.
