Review of The Hermit Gryphon

[Following is a volunteer review of "The Hermit Gryphon" by Paula Grover.]
The Hermit Gryphon: The Redemption of Talona by Paula Grover is a delightful tale to read. I highly recommend it for people who enjoy reading fantasy, as it is written in an excellent viewpoint that is rarely written out. This book does well as a standalone novel, though lovers of this book will likely want to read the first!
The setting of the book feels genuinely unique. The author does an excellent job at creating the world, and while a bit more detail would be preferred throughout the story, it is not needed to convey what the author wants to write. The summary did the story justice while also not entirely giving everything away. I would recommend this book for teenagers and up due to the content of this novel, as some of what is inside could be considered not suited for children.
The characters are not excessively fleshed out; which, depending on the reader, can be a good or bad thing. I feel there is genuine surprise when it comes to some aspects of them, which is usually a good thing for stories like this. The relationships between characters are beautifully crafted and complex throughout the story as well as ever evolving and changing, giving the reader the chance to feel as though one is doing the same thing with them.
Some of the word choices inside the book are a little strange to me, but readers can generally tell from context clues what the author is trying to convey. This does make the story feel a little more stilted at parts, but it doesn’t ruin the experience of honestly enjoying the book.
I gave this book four out of five stars I have for how enjoyable it was to read. The editing of it was quite good and the author clearly knew what they were doing.
