Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! by Len Foley is a hilarious children’s book for ages 3 to 7. Through the interesting medium of reverse psychology, it implicitly communicates the don’ts of hygiene and cleanliness. Sigfried’s book is truly replete with several noxious odors which make up its terrible stink. Sigfried is only responsible for a portion of these odors though. Members of his family including his uncle, his siblings, and his dog have contributed their fair share to make the book a very smelly book.

The book isn’t the only smelly thing Sigfried has, Sigfried's socks don’t smell pleasant either. Although Sigfried insists that his socks stink but not as much as the book, readers can’t help but doubt this once they listen to the description of the socks’ various odors. One pair of socks smelled so horribly that it could cause a collapse!

The concept of the book is both funny innovative. This smelly sock story will leave children laughing or booing out loud at Sigfried. The shocking and scandalous nature of the book will effectively hold their interest and make it an exciting read to them while its short length ensures that their attention won’t wander before the story ends.

Reading this book aloud to the child may make them want to learn how to read by igniting the child’s curiosity and adventurous spirit. This adventurous spirit makes the child want to read the story on their own with or without adult help. The book can also serve as a reading guide as the sentences are short and simple, suitable for beginner readers.

Nouns, adjectives, and verbs fill the sentences of the story, and these examples of their appropriate use will be beneficial to the child’s learning process. Uncommon nouns are both used and illustrated and help to expand the vocabulary and broaden the child’s knowledge.

The illustrations are brilliantly done and accompany almost every sentence of the story. The colors are vivid and appealing which maintains the child's concentration. The lines are also lyrical and often rhyme, this further captures the unstable attention spans of little children. The font is childish and dances in keeping with the theme and genre of the book.

The book's concept may be a little risky as some children may decide to emulate rather than disdain the actions detailed in the story. However, I still believe this to be an excellent book for children and thus, will give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

I also wondered if the book would backfire and cause kids to revel in the smelly, stinky messes around them! Your observations are insightful and helpful. I can imagine having fun times reading this book with my young friends. Thanks for a great review!

I think your review is spot on. I really enjoyed this book, and found that as an adult, it is just as fun to read to a child as I'm sure it is to hear it :)
Thanks for the review!

It seems like a cute book. According to you, this book offers illustrations for uncommon nouns, that is wonderful because it is almost always a sign that the author actually cares about writing for children.

Thanks for the review!
I also enjoyed the book despite not being a child. I also asked for feedback from another adult and she also was amused by Sigfried, his smelly book and his stinky socks. Thanks for your comment.

Thank you for your comment. I also find the books title to my liking. The title alone is already worth a number of giggles.
