When you travel through the convoluted labyrinth where all the stories reside, you come across diverse experiences that range from intergalactic wars and life on a spaceship to secret societies and magical realms. Sometimes, if you take that one lucky turn in the maze, you come across some wonderful jewel of a story that doesn't have and never will have a match throughout history. Yesterday was that kind of book. It was the kind of book you read on lazy afternoon, cuddled up on the porch with a cup of coffee in your hand, a smell of wet ground in the air, and the beautiful sounds of rain providing a lovely playlist for your story.

Yesterday was a story about love, hope and courage. It was a story about a girl named Amanda Parker who saves Officer Mark Callahan’s life. Mark and Amanda instantly feel drawn to each other. With the help of her godmother, Mary Axelrod, who happens to be a psychiatrist, Amanda and Mark investigate the bond the makes them both feel like they know each other even as they’re sure that they’ve never met before. What they find is a love that lasts longer than life. Amanda gets to know Bonnie May Belle Lexington, her past incarnation and the book follows their parallel stories as they unfold.

I admire the deep familial bond between the characters. The love and support that family provides truly has no equal. Six year old Bonnie Lexington and her cousin Jack Wellington end up in Chicago after a chain of unfortunate incidents. Penelope and Margaret Starks adopt the wayward orphans and raise them as part of their family. Their love and compassion for these strangers was a facet of this book that really touched me.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It’s slow-paced, sweet and relaxing. I would recommend it to anyone who has an afternoon to kill. My favorite part was the characters. They’re complex, funny and very easy to love. Amanda has lost so many people she cared about that she’s scared of falling in love. Mark is stubborn, arrogant and already very much in love with his sapphire-eyed savior. It was fun to watch those two together. Another thing I loved was the parallel between Bonnie’s life and Amanda’s.

The Past Life Therapy was an interesting concept. I don’t believe in reincarnations, but this book makes it a tempting possibility to consider. I’ve never been in love, but I hope it exists, and I hope that sometimes, it’s strong enough to transcend the boundary between life and death. There was a lot of technical discussion about some topics which helped me understand the situation better. The Civil war and fire in Chicago are foreign topics to me, and I was only vaguely aware of them. It was an enlightening experience to look at those incidents through the lens of this story. Yesterday made me look at love and life in a different way and I’m eternally grateful for that.

This was definitely an interesting read, and it does make you think about what would happen if this were real. I enjoyed the historical scenes more than the "modern" love story, but the book's beginning was a little slow for me. Great review!
