[Following is a volunteer review of "Final Notice" by Van Fleisher.]

In Final Notice by Van Fleisher, a new watch developed by a scientist with a medical background is sparking the interest of the country. This watch, called the VT2, constantly monitors ones' vital signs, giving accurate up to the second health information. Older Americans with low health risks are invited to try the beta test of the product, and a strange phenomenon starts occurring. One of the features of the watch is called "Final Notice," which gives the user a notification of his or her death. Users with this notice are becoming vigilantes, sparking concerns not previously anticipated. As the media and FBI become involved, the novel becomes a topic of controversy, involving the elderly population, and the National Rifle Association.
The author does an excellent job introducing the storyline and the main characters. There are many characters introduced throughout the book, but there are a few recurring characters. There was no real main character and protagonist of the novel, but rather the idea of gun control and the idea of knowing too much about one's mortality that provides thought-provoking discussion.
Gun control is a very sensitive topic in the United States, and the author does a very good job making this story relevant and current. School shootings are addressed, and the author does an excellent job showing sensitivity on this topic. Each of the dozens of characters introduced has realistic thoughts and actions that made for wonderful reading.
This book would make a phenomenal book club assignment, as there are multiple topics introduced that are meant to be discussed. There are many hypothetical situations that any reader could see him or herself in. This book makes me want to do further research on the topics discussed. The topic of gun control shared the main subject along with the idea of planned mortality, and the author does an excellent job pairing the two topics. The main question the novel has provoked is "would you want to know when you are going to die?" The inventor of the VT2 and his team are constantly plagued by this question, and there is no definitive answer. That is a serious and interesting question, in which I am not sure a "correct" answer exists.
I give Final Notice 4 out of 4 stars, because of the adequate pacing, no grammatical or spelling errors, realistic development of the characters, and interesting subject material. I would recommend this to any mature reader (due to excessive violence, profanity, and sensitive subject material) looking for their next book club book.
