Solaris Seethes is the first book in the Solaris Saga written by Janet McNulty. In this book, we meet the character Rynah who has just had her planet, Lanyr, destroyed by the selfish acts of one power hungry individual. In an effort to save other planets from this same fate, she must enlist the help of four strangers from another planet and a strange ship that was given to her by her grandfather.

There's a decent sized list of things that I liked about this book. For one, I liked the pacing of the story. Nothing felt too rushed or too drawn out. Everything felt like it was done in a realistic amount of time. Another thing I really liked was the characters. They all had different enough personalities to where my brain could recognize them as separate people. This may seem like it would be a given in any story, but some writers actually struggle with this important aspect of writing. The characters also displayed the corresponding characteristics to their origins which I thought was an important detail. I also liked the amount of detail in the book. It helped me gain a better understanding of the environment that the characters were in.

On the subject of detail, I would like to touch upon the negative side of this as well as other things I disliked about this book. Although, this list is significantly shorter and doesn’t really change the overall value of the book. Talking about detail, there were times where there would be multiple points of detail in a slightly overwhelming amount of parenthesis. While I do like it when authors add description in this style, it can feel a little like we’re detracting too much attention away from the main events when there are multiple sets of parenthesis cluttered on one page. I also wasn’t a particular fan about a specific scene in the book. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just refer to it as the prostitute bit. I found this part to be completely unnecessary and I couldn’t help but feel a little insulted. While this may not have been the author's intentions, this is how I naturally reacted to this scene.

Overall, I believe this book was very well written. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I didn't think the book deserved a 2 because of the good plot and characters. I genuinely did enjoy this book. However, I didn’t think it deserved a perfect 4 out of 4 because as I said before, the amount of description was a little overwhelming at times.

I think this book would properly appeal to a younger audience or people who enjoy science fiction books. It probably wouldn’t appeal to audiences who prefer cold hard facts. It might be hard to pinpoint an exact audience who would or would not enjoy this because people have whole lists of preferences. I will say that this book can appeal to anybody who is willing to walk in with an open mind.
