In today’s world, the concept of working from home has gained immense popularity, especially in light of recent global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. While working from home and achieving financial freedom is like a dream for some who often wonder how to get started, others pursue it with tenacity, constantly failing to notice the challenges and realities that come with the process of achieving it. This shift in work culture has led many individuals to re-evaluate their career paths and financial goals. This is no different for mothers who aspire to attain financial freedom while enjoying the flexibility that remote work offers, especially spending time with their children.

Patricia Jennings’ book, “Entrepreneurship: 5 Best Practices for Stay-at-Home Moms Who Want to Start an Online Business,” is a perfect guide for mothers who have decided to start an online business but still have no distinct idea of how to cope with the numerous challenges that this process entails. The author offers practical strategies, insights, and advice on how to become a mompreneur in six chapters, emphasizing on the importance of mothers creating something for themselves while helping others. She has a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by stay-at-home moms and experience being an entrepreneur, making this book a timely resource for those seeking to navigate their path to financial independence.

There are several things I like about this book. I like how the author encourages mothers to believe that they can do it all: work from home, be around their kids, and also be entrepreneurs while profiting from helping others. She also encourages them to continue building their e-businesses regardless of the obstacles that may delay their progress. She makes it clear that distractions from kids are normal, even when they have schedules, and that the responsibilities may feel intimidating. She also assures them that it is not uncommon for their business goals to seem unreachable, making her content practical and relatable to many. She urges them to focus on one thing at a time by setting weekly objectives, maintaining a daily routine and to-do list, batching tasks, and managing time effectively. She details various online business ideas and the skills required to become successful. She emphasizes the importance of choosing a niche to focus on, especially one that aligns with your values and personality, meets the market demands, and is vital for building a successful online presence.

I particularly like the author’s writing style, which made me feel as though I was consulting with her in a room. She comes across as honest and authentic. For example, on page 24, she points out that “your customers cannot only come from your close circle. You would not get enough customers even if your family is believed to be your greatest supporter.” Jennings insists on having a concise goal of what you want and includes steps for creating a business plan and tools mompreneurs need to succeed in their business. She delves deeper into explaining how to start your online business operations, various ways to secure funding, attract customers, and keep them engaged, from email marketing and social media management to utilizing SEO and other Google features to your advantage.

I learned a lot about useful apps for work-life balance, how to attain long-term success, how to create a webpage, and multiple platforms to use, such as WordPress and Wix. I also learned how to ensure that your website is responsive to mobile devices for higher rankings, how to build a one-on-one relationship with customers, how to integrate your e-commerce with social media, as well as how to gain more traffic on your website. This information is not only useful and helpful to mom entrepreneurs but also to anyone interested in starting an e-commerce business.

I agree with the author that it is easy to forget to take care of yourself; thus, engaging in self-care practices is very crucial. She provides different examples of self-care that mompreneurs can undertake to relax, re-energize, and arouse creativity, and advises to adding them to their to-do list or schedule to not forget.

This book is well-paced and organized into six chapters which made it easy to read and understand the content. However, the book contains grammatical errors including incorrect tenses and sentence structures which negatively impacted my reading experience while trying to grasp what was being conveyed; thus, the book is not professionally edited. For example, on page 27, “Innovation failure is a complex characteristic of entrepreneurial setback contributors.” Another downside is that the author did not include herself among the examples of successful mompreneurs; she only mentions how she joined the Navy at 22 and how it shaped her, without explaining about her entrepreneurial journey. Additionally, in the introduction, the author jumps from discussing herself, and her realization, while in Spain, that her fulfillment is tied to entrepreneurship, to another entrepreneur named Janice. I felt that the paragraph about Janice was inserted awkwardly and did not connect well to the preceding paragraph, disrupting the flow. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 5, deducting one star because of the aforementioned drawbacks.

This book is a great resource for mothers who aspire to be entrepreneurs, as it contains tools and resources they might need to turn their ideas into reality.

I was encouraged to add the book as I started reading your review. I have read a fair number of entrepreneurship and self-help books. But none of them are suitable for housewives. The lapses you mentioned, whether in terms of grammar or the author's not sharing her experience, make me think again. I hope the author will look into these points.

Thank you for informative, and honest review.

This book seems like it would be really helpful to stay at home moms looking to start a business. The author’s advice delves into some different parts of starting a business that aren’t always thought of right away, like securing funds and keeping interest, not just attracting it. Great review!

Based on your review I would recommend this book to entrepreneur-wanna-be-moms who would benefit from the tools and resources that are highlighted for building an internet-based business while being a stay-at-home mom. I hope the author re-organizes the book, passes it through a round of editing, and shares her own entrepreneurial experiences, as you have suggested. This could become a 5-star book.

I like your detailed review. This book will be greatly helpful for moms who are stuck between the deep desire to do something but also conflicted with home and family priorities. The flaws you mentioned are valid, but if one were to ignore those, I think the book will still be useful for mompreneurs. Thanks for the review! I'll be recommending this book to many of my friends!

I truly understand why moms want to stay at home with their children, but many do not think that it is possible in the current economic setting. This book seems to have practical suggestions for doing just that. I only hope that it is easy to follow for those, like stay-at-home moms, who don’t have a lot of free time. Thanks!
