[Following is a volunteer review of "Love Hate Law" by Mark M. Bello.]
Love Hate Law is a legal romance that I'd rate 3 out of 5. I felt the author used good figures of speech and a casual tone that draws us in, however, near the end it lost a bit of that charm and felt a bit boring. The world-building is well done, it's descriptive enough that you can picture it without a wall of text. It also doesn't take away from the characters and their emotions. The banter between the characters is quick and reads with a good rhythm most of the time. At times, there are too many pauses for the dialogue to feel authentic. The descriptions were not image-evoking enough for me to feel the tension and emotions growing between the two characters. It felt a bit abrupt when they announced their interest. The dialogue could sometimes fall flat, and the emotions of the cast wouldn't be communicated well enough. It could also be long at times with no pauses for reactions or thoughts, as a result, you sometimes forget the character. It's nice to see a healthy male character who is able to recognize weaknesses and Michael's character development was a highlight for me. The plot felt decently fleshed out, there was a bit of tension to create interest in the reader. It was also incredibly informative on the legal system, you can tell the author has been there and that adds a great personal and authentic touch to the novel. I would have loved to see more interactions between the main characters, with smaller details that make love so special such as things she never noticed she did but he always looked for. The last part of the book read like an essay summarization of the plot, it almost felt flat and lacked the same banter we saw in the beginning. There was also a lot of repetition in the characters' reactions. Overall the book was quite a slow burn with a decent plot idea and execution.
