Review of Let's Be Honest
”Let’s Be Honest: Living a Life of Radical, Biblical Integrity” by Jeremy Gove proceeds to elaborate on the idea of accepting Jesus's example of morality, faith, and piety with the good humor and opinions of every individual. All of Jeremy Gove’s explanations in this book are Biblically based. With ample detail and practical experience, Jeremy elaborated on how to make a sincere and meek life instead of a life full of deception, which is egocentric in nature. Putting these two pieces together, that is, if a person is truthful and honest, it becomes the foundation of a Godly life free from fear and the selfishness of dishonesty. But does that mean truth can reach out to not just a person but bring a radical shift in an entire society? Read ”Let’s Be Honest: Living a Life of Radical, Biblical Integrity” by Jeremy Gove to find out.
This book will indeed provoke you as well as get you to rethink yourself as to how you actually define and lead a life of honesty. The author used really relatable and practical stories to explain the concept of BASIC (Brokenness, Accuracy, Steadfastness, Integrity, and Credibility) and how to live a life of radical honesty. For instance, the story of a college student who was given an assignment of drawing a friend and was awarded a C minus. This is because the picture did not meet the standard that the lecturer expected; the student, however, got an A minus when he brought his friend Bubba. This story explains how the culture of using Photoshop has manipulated the truth and the standards and norms in the society, which greatly contribute to how we live and how we view things in our life. Another beautiful example from the book is the story of Dr. Livingstone, whose assumed loss of a precious goat in exchange for a stick caused him to possess a divine instrument in sharing the Words of God. Themes explored in the book include the concepts of humility, honesty, fear, and love; the challenges of spiritual growth; the essence of faith; and surrendering to God’s will. Jeremy’s use of different stories and analogies to drive in on his point makes this book not just instructional but also profoundly convincing.
I love everything about this book; first, the explanations in the book are not heavy-handed or fault-finding like other scriptural books I have read. Rather, this book combines relatable anecdotes with scriptural exegesis and modern illustration; these combinations make readers comfortable and highly invested in the teachings of the book. Jeremy’s writing style is approachable as he makes complex theological ideas very accessible with his use of practical examples; for instance, his explanation of the Hebrew word “emet” as the representation of truth from the beginning to the end and the all-encompassing nature of integrity. And the tone employed in the book remains consistent throughout.
There's nothing I dislike about this book. The book excels in its scriptural and theological exploration. The stories told are meaningful, and the citing of biblical verses helps to give a clearer and more detailed explanation about different themes discussed in the book.
The book is professionally edited; I found no grammatical errors. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, as the teaching is both logical and reasonable; the reference to the scripture is very comprehensive, and the author’s detailed research shows authenticity and professionalism. I recommend this book to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of what it means to live a life of integrity despite the worldly moral decay; I will also recommend it to Christians striving to align their actions and life with their faith and submit more to God’s will.
