Heartaches is a romance novel written by H M Irwing. It focuses mostly on the lives of two people that is Anna Walter-Simons and Rafael Luis Brown both living in Melbourne Australia.

We begin with Anna as a young girl lost her poor loving dad Daniel Walters at a tender age and life begins to take its own twist on her as her mother gets married again to John Simmons who becomes harsh on her and her mother which was agony to her. Nevertheless she experiences more at school as they bully her but she is rescued by Matt Preston who becomes her boyfriend and made her world always merry. On the other side John Simmons happens to have another son (Brian Simmons) who is a murderer and ends up murdering him too.

On Rafael Luis Brown (Rafe), his life unfolds as he comes back from the army after thirteen years of service. He comes home to his aunt Bella but there is much he had endured before and after joining the army in Syria. His mother was pregnant by the time he got married to James Brown then produced Rafe. Though Mr Brown happened not to be the real father, but still loved and cared for him like a son. Only his rage arose when Rafe's mother got pregnant again by Rafe's father (Peter P) which led Mr Brown to kill Rafe's mother (Samantha Russo) and after start torturing Rafe almost killing him. This all escalated Rafe's decision to join the army hoping for relief. In the army, he's first ten years are profound but the next three proved hell-of-a-kind as he is drugged and used as sex slave later on raped by a mob of soldiers.

Anna is drugged and raped in a foursome as organised by her boyfriend Matt. She feels cheated, heartbroken and betrayed. But in that state of betrayal, she finds Rafe who turns to be a joy-giver and a helper though not knowing that he had gone through the same saga but he was enduring with much that can't be uttered. Along the way they fall in love as Anna had joined the army school. Rafe acts as a pillar of protection to her and they continue to find justice about their coinciding incidents. On the side of Anna it's the Prestons and on Rafe's it's captain Eric Dayton who is his oppressor. But am left in suspense not knowing the fate of Anna and Rafe as I wind to the last page but no conclusion. I really cannot wait for the next edition.

As a reader I found the book teaching more about how rape victims face difficult moments in finding justice as just questions they ask the victim are torture to the mind and emotions too. It really goes far as scientific diagnosis at some time cannot prove a rape case real as witnessed when Anna was raped for the second time and diagnosed but there was no proof of forcing into her person. It is really a good book for adults because of the graphical content and language used.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is candid though some errors grammatically were present but few. Like to highlight where the writer says "Brian wore his on his sleeve," she didn't explain his what?. Also a few more the writer didn't elaborate well in the third person reporting as she was caught unaware in a few reported speeches. In all its a good book as it captures the rape and the abuse of people's rights in the contemporary society. It truly gives a vivid picture into that life.
