Review of "Yesterday", by Samyann
The story sets off with a train accident. Amanda, the protagonist, sees the accident and saves the life of a young policeman. His name is Mark. Both of them have the feeling that they somehow know each other, yet they have never met. Amanda and Mark find themselves in front of an antique shop in Chicago, where Amanda discovers an antique clock, which she feels drawn to immediately. Somehow she has the feeling that she has seen that very clock before, but it cannot be possible.
Amanda has had a very troubled and tragic past. She has lost many dear ones, and therefore she believes that she cannot love anybody without hurting them. Amanda will not let anybody near her until she meets Mark, the man whom she has just saved. Mark is a policeman, just like his father was. He feels the need to protect the world from evil and criminals.
This book was very interesting and different. I certainly enjoyed the topic "reincarnation" and the protagonist's interestest in antique objects. Furthermore, the time period was very intriguing and the fact that the slaves weren't treated as slaves, but as human beings had a positive effect on my reading experience. The descriptions of nature were very beautiful and poetic, as shown in this excerpt: "Live oaks draped long strands of pale green moss swaying in a light breeze, tendrils of silk tinted coral by the sun." Another linguistic aspect which had a positive effect on me was the use of sarcasm. The use of sarcasm made me laugh out loud and made the whole story a bit less serious.
I haven't read any other book on this very same topic. Therefore I found this concept to be quite entertaining and interesting. The author also made the characteristics of Amanda and Mark (also known as Bonnie and Daniel in the past) very clear in order to let the reader know, which of the characters the protagonists were in the past. I found the story to be entertaining from the very beginning to the very end. This novel makes you believe in soulmates.
As much as I want this book to be perfect, I cannot say that it was, as nothing ever is. There were a few mistakes in this novel, such as: "Ben sat on a cracked bench and stood Bonnie in front of him." (p. 241). Mistakes such as these are quite common. Even the most popular and professionally edited books have occasional mistakes in them.
All in all, I gave this book 3 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in a slightly different but enjoyable historical fiction novel.
