Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper is an exciting read that captures your attention immediately. Set in the Jim Crow South, this book tells the story of Vanessa Cordon and her journey to be accepted in a world that runs rampant with racism. If it’s not something you can look past, I would advise those who are sensitive to strong language and sexual content to avoid this book. This type of content flows quite freely throughout the whole book. In my opinion, the content is necessary and is used in a way that’s in line with the story. If you aren’t used to or are bothered by the strong language, it can seem overwhelming at times. I found this book well-edited with no errors.

Vanessa, the lead in Deceptive Calm , was raised in an orphanage in Charleston, South Carolina, from a young age. While she is African American, she appears to be Caucasian. She takes on the identity of a young girl, also named Vanessa, who had died several years before. This was common practice back then, as birth and death records weren’t regulated like now. With her new identity settled, she starts working through the more corporate side of her broadcasting job. Vanessa encounters many ups and downs on her path that eventually leads her to marry a very well-off man in San Francisco society.

This story is an interesting read with well-developed and mostly likable characters. I typically don’t read historical fiction, but I decided to give this one a try because I love San Francisco. The author draws you into this story, and it feels like you’re watching a movie. I am not very familiar with the historical parts of this book regarding if they hold factual or not, but I found the story entertaining regardless. From the great editing to the wonderful storyline, I gladly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars .
