Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole, follows Abigail Dressler, who is on the search for her adoptive father. While conducting her own investigation, she stumbles across Haatim Arison; a young man caught in the crossfires of a mystery. A supernatural mystery that changes everything he believes to be true. And a truth he does not want to acknowledge being real. Now, he is sure that Abigail is the only one who he can trust because his life is in her hands.
Sometimes, I am wary of reading books on the supernatural because I do not want it to become a debate of beliefs. This is not that book, so kudos to the author for steering clear of that. I was able immerse myself in this story and picture the scenery as I read, at times it sent chills down my spine. I even found myself really feeling for Haatim at certain points because he is thrust into a world where evil is walking right beside him. Evil he did not want to believe in. Once one shady entity sought him out, they came in droves. Thinking about them now as I write this, has me shuttering a little.
The pacing of the story is set up really well. I did read through this story quite fast, which obviously means I liked it. Even though I was excited to read on, I was a bit worried that something might happen to Abigail and Haatim. They go through a lot in the few days they are together and not everyone is on their side. Then I had to say myself, “Get a grip, they are characters.”
I did like the progression of Haatim’s character from clueless to questioning his sanity to this is really happening. His mind was fragile in the beginning, but the confidence that emerges in him later is already within him, he just had to stir to life. Sometimes all it takes is another person to bring it bubbling up to the surface; the right person. Abigail opens his eyes to the reality of the situation. Once he fully grasps that fact, they become the Dynamic Duo! This is something any reader could figure out, but how exactly does Haatim go from an almost (notice the almost) zero, to the hero of the duo? It takes him long enough, but he does get there. However, they are nowhere near the end because Raven's Peak is only the first in the series. I definitely will be reading the whole series.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars due to a few errors that were spread out. There are quotes when a character is not speaking and a missing quotation apostrophe. The errors did not take away from the story for me, but they are there if that is bothersome to you.
There is some violence, but it is not very sexually vulgar, if at all. To anyone ages 15 and older, I feel would enjoy this read filled with the supernatural, action, and suspenseful thrills.
