Fish Wielder is a witty and humorous read. The Fish Wielder follows the story of Thoral, a warrior with a mysterious and dark past. Thoral resides in the world of Grome, where there are many different creatures, including elves, gnomes, and fish that live cohesively. Thoral is accompanied in his journey across Grome by a fish named Brad, who is Thoral's friend and voice of reason. In every chapter of the book there seems to be a plot twist and a new, dangerous adventure for Thoral and Brad.
From unexpected attacks, chasing evil characters, to seeking out danger, or rescuing princesses, the story of Thoral and Brad never becomes boring. The tale of Thoral and Brad becomes more interesting and complex as the book goes on. There is a unique surprise for the reader with every turn of the page. Each chapter cleverly and slowly builds the plot to help the reader understand what is so dark about Thoral's past.
Hardison does an excellent job of bringing humor into a fantasy book that has elements of mystery and evil. Hardison has wrote a read that is light and fun, in addition to a book that has an interesting plot that makes one want to not put the book down. The way that Hardison builds his plot and story line is what makes this book an interesting and unique read for the genre of fantasy.
One main issue for me throughout the book was the abundance of detail. Much of this detail seems unnecessary to the plot of the book. In some places, it is hard to tell if over describing what the characters are doing or the setting of the book is intentional and part of Hardison's style. The other main issue that I had with the book was the lack of sophisticated language. In some parts of the book the language seemed quite juvenile. Once again, this could simply be part of Hardison's style.
Overall, I give Fish Wielder a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The book is unique and its characters do not fall into the stereotypical form that fantasy characters often do. However, the first few chapters of the book are a bit dense and hard to read. Once one gets further into the book, the complex humor and unique story line is discovered. It is worth the read once one gets further into the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a read that is a refreshing break from the mold that fantasy books sometimes tend to fall into.
