This coming-of-age story about the friendship and life's journey of Beryl and Carol was intriguing. The way that they discovered a puzzle piece to the beginning of a harrowing adventure to find the lost treasure was a brilliant introduction to their adventures. This story has a combination of a female Goonies and Harriet the Spy, in which Beryl and Carol apply their strengths and weaknesses to solve the mystery of the lost treasure, while dealing with the ups and downs of every day life (i.e. bullies, socio-economic issues, school, changes in their lives) and their friendship (i.e. arguments, disagreements, compromises, etc). The threat of losing their standard of living drives them to find the lost treasure, which they hope will solve all their problems. Although when the time comes to decide whether to do the right thing or what they wanted to do, they have to work through their inner personal struggles as well as the challenges of making a decision that would forever change their lives. The drawings sprinkled throughout the book also help with visualizing the scene or object of interest. Also, the reference to real life events added a touch of non-fiction to this lovely story.
