Scion Saga book 1: Opaque by Cālix Leigh-Reign is a wild ride from start to finish. We are first introduced to Adam, a broody teen boy with an unhealthy obsession with his mom. The author takes us through his backstory of mundane high school life, animosity towards his dad, forbidden love for his mom, dangerous urges, and his overall hatred of humanity. That is, until mysterious Carly shows up one day and then his whole life changes.

Adam and Carly seemingly hate each other from the start but soon realize not everything is as it seems. Carly recognizes the hidden genetic mutation within Adam, one she also shares, and helps him to unlock his own unique gifts. She introduces Adam to the hidden society of Descendents who all possess genetic mutations that allow them to possess unique abilities to influence and manipulate the world around them. Each ability is slowly revealed throughout the book.

Readers are then informed about the other hidden society: the Ishka. The Ishka is a team of scientists to seek to harness the Descendents' abilities for their own use and destroy any others with the mutations that remain. They have a long history of violence, kidnapping, torture, and destruction. We eventually find out more and more information that leads to a journey of forgiveness and healing between Adam and his mom. Without giving any spoilers, basically the team starts a journey to take their lives back for themselves.

I give Opaque a 4 out of 4 stars as I was engrossed throughout the whole book. The ending was only disappointing because it was a cliffhanger, and I wanted more! You fall in love with the characters as the author expertly analyzes all the good and bad hidden within all of us. I definitely recommend Opaque, and look forward to reading more!
