The book Cruel Lessons by Randy Overbeck is a very fast-paced read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The plot builds quickly when very early on, four young fifth grade boys are killed in a drug-related accident while attending a school sponsored camping trip. Along with the police investigation, school staff is very eager to find who is responsible for these students' deaths as well as determine how the drugs are getting into the middle school. The police investigation quickly leads to a suspect and an arrest is made. The assistant superintendent of schools feels as if the wrong person was accused. He, along with the school DARE officer, continue the investigation looking for other possible suspects and clearing rhe name of beloved school teacher, Stacy Thompson.

I found myself continually saying just one more chaper, just one more chapter until, before I knew it, I had finished the book.

I rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed the fast-paced and suspenseful nature of the book. It also contained several interesting sub-plots which added depth to the characters and supported the story-line of the book. However, I could not give this book a 5 star rating because I felt the ending left something to be desired. The ending felt a bit rushed and wrapped up a little too quickly and neatly, in my opinion. Although most of the books' events occurred in a realistic way, the ending was a bit unbelievable. I feel the same ending would have worked had it been developed a little more. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend those who like suspenseful novels to read it. Just be prepared to be a little disappointed in the ending.
