“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” – Romans 3:23

Have you ever wondered why the world today is becoming more corrupt and evil? Are you curious as to why people are becoming more wicked and sinful in this generation? What is the root of all sin?

William E. Combs is a retired Presbyterian minister with a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary wrote a book entitled: "Who Told You That You Were Naked?" A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden.

This book initially came from Rev. William Comb’s preaching sermon. He wrote the book because he believes that our world is in serious trouble. People tend to rely to the government, law enforcement and social services to stop the evil from corrupting our society. However, relying on them alone won’t stop the evil in this world. Even if we give ourselves to everything the world has to offer, it will leave us defenseless to evil and naked in the end. He wrote the book because he wants to tell the world the importance of having faith in God. He also wants Christians (believers of the Lord Jesus Christ) to rise up and start reaching out to the lost and lead them to the way of righteousness. As he quoted this verse in Matthew 5:13, But Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?”

The purpose of this book is for readers to understand how sin came into the world through one man (Adam) which resulted in the condemnation of all men; and how justification and redemption came through Jesus Christ. According to Romans 5:12-19, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned… Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam… For if many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many…For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of one man many will be made righteous."

This book consists of 10 chapters with 185 standard pages. In the first 4 chapters, William Combs reexamines the origin of our sinful nature which began during the time of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die." - Genesis 2:16-17. This book shared what happened when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The 2nd half of the book focused on what faith is all about, who Jesus Christ is, and how faith in Jesus Christ is the only way for one’s salvation.

As a Christian myself, I have read the Book of Genesis numerous times, and so I was impressed when the author wrote this story in a narrative manner. I like how he used his creativity in conveying the story, even adding a little of his own imagination of what happened. I once thought that the origin of sin was mainly due to Adam and Eve’s act of disobedience and rebellion against God. Through this book, I came to understand that when their eyes were opened, they became aware of their own insecurities and differences. Their self-consciousness that they do not measure up to God led to them being ashamed of their own nakedness.

I like how the book is well written comprehensively. It was full of biblical facts and information both from Old and New Testament, and how they are related with each other. He has a profound understanding of the Bible as he shared his own insights and explanations of the bible verses and how it is applicable in our lives today. Each chapter begins with a definition of a word and ending it with a list of reflection questions. He also added his own personal testimonies which I found interesting and inspirational as well.

As a whole, I will rate this book 4 out of 4. Honestly, I really love this book because it made an impact in my life. The book is not only informative but it is also inspiring for it appeals to one’s heart and mind. Not only did I gain wisdom and deeper understanding of the origin of sin, the consequences of our fallen sinful nature but it also touched my soul and strengthens my faith and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. This book made me realized how God loves us so much in spite being sinners. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

I would like to recommend this book to everyone, both Christians and non-Christians who are seeking God and the truth about life. This book will help you realize how you can be freed from sin, find redemption and have eternal life through Jesus Christ. This book is also a good topic for bible group study discussions.

Read this book and you will encounter God in your life. Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31-32
