Puffy and the Formidable Foe by Marie G. Lepowski, Ann M. Hannon and Margaret B. Hannon, is a children's literature book containing 22 pages. The target audience of the book is for children in Kindergarten to Second Grade reading levels. The moral of the story is to stress the importance of how roaming away from home can introduce unpleasant strangers and unwanted consequences for such encounters.
Puffy is a cat, that is, like many other cats who have lived before him, a curious creature. Puffy begins his day by going in search of a mouse for food and instead finds a mole. The mole is not the desired meal for Puffy so he roams into the forest to explore and meets an undesirable stranger. Puffy learns quickly that his actions have consequences and decides that it would have been better to stay at home where it is safe.
I enjoyed this book as an inter-active learning tool for children about safety and accepting the consequences of their actions. The authors used several different avenues to teach the lesson of the story such as, the colorful illustrations, rhyming words for easier reading, and a reward system of a coloring page at the conclusion of the book that remains on topic to the moral of the story. The illustrations are on point for each page and rich in color to keep children's attention. The rhyming words introduce poetry to children and helps them learn to read. Finally, the enclosed coloring page is a wonderful reward for reading and discussing the book for children which continues to keep them engaged with the story and commit the lesson to memory.
The length of the book is excellent containing 22 pages. The book is long enough to develop the story but not so long that the reader looses focus and interest. Young children especially have a short attention span, so the length of the book is incredibly important to not let them start to tune out the message. The rhyming words put the lines in a song like pattern which is helpful for beginning readers to be able to read the text more easily.
Overall, I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 stars. There is only one error or type-o that I found in reading the story so I feel the editing is professionally done. I recommend this book to individuals who work with children as an excellent teaching tool about safety and awareness. I feel that this book has a powerful message that both teachers and parents can appreciate and utilize in this generation of students.
