[Following is a volunteer review of "Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper.]
I had the pleasure of reading Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper recently. This is the first book that I have read by this author. The book is a story about the lives of several characters and how they intertwine over the years. It follows them from their teenage years through growing up and making a life for themselves. The storyline is packed with the ups and downs of life. It was a very thought provoking and informative read. The author uses the story to make the reader contemplate many issues that are relevant to most anyone. I was so involved with the story that I read the book in one sitting. The characters are very relatable and their story keeps you turning the pages. I would give this book a rating of four out of five stars. I would have given it five stars, but it was a bit too descriptive for me. There are quite a few instances of cussing in this book. There is also some sexual content. If that sort of storytelling bothers someone, then this book might not be for them. The storyline is also sprinkled with many historical facts and snippets of southern culture. The author is very descriptive in telling the story and makes you feel as if you are actually going through what the characters are feeling. The book has a wide variety of feelings and emotions throughout its storyline. From love to suspense, it has something for everyone. The plot is presented in a well thought out and very cohesive way. It is very easy to follow and flows nicely. The characters catch and hold your attention and will have you turning the pages quickly to discover what happens next. If you have the time and are looking for your next read, I would highly recommend Deceptive Calm as that book. This book will not disappoint. Thank you for taking the time to read this review and happy reading to everyone.
