Teen Life Skills by Florance Philip is an all-encompassing guidebook on navigating your teenage years. It covers hygiene, relationships, and everything a teenager would benefit from knowing.

I appreciated the personal tone created by the author. It makes the book’s contents seem less daunting to someone facing teenage challenges and creates the idea that you're receiving insightful wisdom from an older guardian or friend. The book is uplifting and encouraging, maintaining a positive tone from its dedication through to its conclusion. It emphasises the highs of being a teenager while being upfront about the lows and how to handle them. Philip makes it clear that she’s been there; she knows what works and what doesn’t.

On that note, Philip does a good job of addressing the usual concerns of adolescence. She hammers home how detrimental things like drugs, teenage pregnancy, and alcohol can be. The serious tone she takes with these necessary topics contrasts with the upbeat tone of the rest of the book, making sure the warnings are noticed. In addition to vices, Philip also talks about necessary things like safety protocols for fires, CPR procedures, and the importance of knowing first aid.

Notable features of this book include beautiful illustrations, each with captions that augment the topic. There are also anecdotes from the author which add personality to the book. My favourite additions, though, are the interactive activities at the end of each chapter. The author includes budget planners, checklists, gratitude and journaling prompts, and short response questions designed to help the reader use the ideas in the book. There are also quotes from people teenagers are likely to know, such as Keke Palmer, Ariana Grande, and Michelle Obama.

Another noteworthy aspect is that, in the chapter about cooking, the author includes several recipes for cooking and baking. I loved this, and I am sure it will be helpful to any teenagers trying their hand at cooking.

Overall, I would rate this book a 5 out of 5. I found nothing to dislike and would highly recommend it to any teenager.
