A young boy named Sigfried opens up about all the smelly things in his household. Some smells come from everyday things, while others are just outright bizarre. He shows off his stinky sock collection and describes the awful smell of each one before he attempts to wash his socks with a surprising twist!
When sharing the book with my two-year-old, I noticed he took great interest in the drawings. From page one, it is easy to see how phenomenal the illustrations are. Foley authored and illustrated the book, and it is a true representation of his talent. The illustrations are original and whimsical with a unique style of expression. Foley even carried his playful style into the book's font, displaying great attention to detail. The combination of real-life images with his illustrations was also refreshing and gave the book a wacky touch; something hugely appreciated by small children.
The book was also written very well. Every page is simple to read, and the words and descriptions are very entertaining. It also points out colors and patterns which is great practice for my son who is learning his colors. Each word exudes a level of playfulness that does not go unnoticed, leaving children eager to turn the page.
At first, I could not find a thing about the book that I would change when I read it by myself. I smiled and laughed through every page and took interest in all the silliness. However, it wasn't until I read the book aloud with my son when I noticed there is an irregular rhyme scheme that is tricky to keep up with. I would get into a rhythm when reading, but on the next page, the rhymes just seem to disappear. If the rhyming were consistent throughout the book, it would have been an easier read, and it would have added to the playful theme.
Overall I found the book highly enjoyable for my son and me. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Everything, from the artwork to the words, is filled with character. Everything about it is sure to appeal to small children and parents alike. It is a great read to put any child in a lighthearted mood at bedtime. The book would be 4 stars if it maintained a consistent rhyme scheme, but this hardly takes away from its quality. 'Sigfried's Smelly Socks!' is easily a fan favorite in our home.
