Former DEA agent, now elected Sheriff of Cameron County in Texas—the southernmost county in the state—Hardin “Stainless” Steel has seen his fair share of drug runners come into his district. But nothing has prepared him for the adventure that awaits him in South of Good.

As County Sheriff, he has stopped many batches of drugs from entering the US. In the process, he’s made an enemy of Mexican drug cartel leader Frederick Ochoa—who has generational ties back to Nazi Germany—who now has Stainless on the top of his hit list.

Ochoa begins his revenge by kidnapping Steel’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, Rory Roughton, and hires an assassin to fire a rocket launcher at one of his friend’s small planes.

So begins the battle for supremacy between the two. With trips to Mexico, the Cayman Islands, and Cuba, the action doesn’t let up—not until the very end, where it leaves the reader gasping for more.

Can Stainless rescue his girlfriend in time, and can anybody really capture Frederick Ochoa? Only those who read this book will know the answers to those questions.

Randall Reneau gets straight into it. By the end of Chapter 2, the reader already knows what the story is about and is bang-smack in the thick of the action. The action is over the top and, in some cases, slightly unbelievable, but for me, that makes this genre even more entertaining.

I love the cast of characters. Despite his somewhat less-than-sheriff-like antics, it’s hard not to feel endeared to the lead character, Stainless. Rory is a force to be reckoned with, and I enjoyed reading about her strength when she needed it most. Wes Stoddard, the drug mule with a heart of gold, was one of my favorite characters, and surprisingly, so was the Russian hitman Alexsie Yazov.

There’s nothing for me to fault about this story. The book is professionally edited, and I only picked up a few minor errors; given that and with the page-turning plot, I’m encouraged to award South of Good, 5 out of 5 stars.

Lovers of action/adventure and good vs. bad guys will enjoy this book the most. There’s violence, torture, blood-shed, and references to sex, so this book is better suited for young adults and up. South of Good is book one of the series and sets the story up perfectly. I’m very excited to find out what comes next.

The characters seem clear to me through your description, Stephen. Perhaps the scenes of violence and blood prevent me from reading the book, but I loved reading your review. It is considered my refined version of the story ☺️Thank you. Great review!

Unfortunately action/adventure books like this do have their fair share of violence and bloodshed, and that's definitely not for everyone. Thanks so much for stopping by.
