Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga Book 1) by Janet NcNulty is the first story in a four-book saga. It’s a great sci-fi/fantasy for the young adult that enjoys space and time travel.
Rynah is a security officer at a geolab on the planet of Lanyr where she guards a powerful jewel artifact instrumental to the survival of her world. When the planet is under attack by someone close to her; Rynah attempts to safe guard it. She is unsuccessful but saved by boarding her grandfather’s old ship Solaris, a vessel with infinite abilities, including her own persona. While fleeing her dying home she discovers that the artifact is one of six that are part of a myth to create a weapon that could destroy planets.
In order to stop the destruction of the rest of the universe; Rynah must follow an age-old prophecy and work with 4 interesting earthlings from different eras and times. Together they must find the other jewel and prevent the universe from being destroyed.
Solaris is the spaceship and a focal point of the series. She seems to have intelligence and feelings. Her sense of humor is very contagious. Rynah has human qualities; wanting revenge. This desire drives her decisions for a while, luckily she has her team to guide her to the right path. Alfric, Tom, Solon, and Brie are great partners-in-crime. They’re plucked out their own times and sent on a quest to save everyone. They have their ups and downs but come together to make a great team.
The story line is catching and even though there’s a group of people they have their own voice and the reader isn’t confused by who is talking and who they are talking to. The action is page turning and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. It ends with a cliffhanger so you understand that there is more to the story and pushes you to get the next installment.
I give this book a 3 out of 4 rating. I didn’t find any grammatical errors. The characters have their own hang ups and flaws that are endearing to the reader. With different time periods the author did a great job of bridging the culture and technology gaps. Those who enjoy having an in-depth character may feel it was lacking in this story. I wanted more understanding of where they were from, their background. This is hopefully explained more in the next series. It’s a wonderful adventure for the science fiction and history buff. It seemed geared toward young adults and teens, however adults may also enjoy this story as well.
