Health is a hot commodity. Everyone wants it. With so many diet, exercise, and health product advertisements constantly being broadcasted, either through radio, television, books, social media or the internet, it can be hard to determine what can be truly helpful or what is a hoax. In his book, Health Tips, Myths and Tricks, A Physician’s Advice, Dr. Morton E Tavel offers to shed some light from a medical perspective on many of the most popular health facts, ideas and trends that are circulating the globe. Whether it is something your parents taught you when you were a child or the newest fad, each health question you’ve ever had or wondered about is pretty much discussed in this book. Each topic has its own chapter and the author provides significant research, study findings, advice, and a conclusion so that you can come away with a better understanding to make an informed decision.

The book is separated in three sections. The first, TIPS, offers tidbits of health and wellness information that can be added to your daily lifestyle for maximum benefit. The second, MYTHS, delves into the urban legends that seem ingrained into our society such as stretching before exercise, as well as countless others. Lastly, TRICKS segues into more of the hoax type of items that you might spend your money on without providing any real or lasting health benefit.

While each subject is viewed in separate sections, some health information that is provided can overlap due to correlation, but if you are particularly interested in a certain topic, it is set up so that you can just go to that chapter directly, which is a nice feature.

While the format is great, and the 60+ various topics give valuable insight and information, it tends to be biased and a bit cumbersome. The chapters sometimes read more as doctor research or a scientific publication which might make it difficult for the normal, everyday reader that is not in that field.

All in all, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the practical advice and knowledge that I gleaned, and I appreciated the author’s willingness to research, disseminate, and provide the findings on such a variety of topics concerning your wellbeing. It is a interesting read. So when you have the time, jump into this book, read a chapter, and begin to take charge of your own health.

Very nice review. I like you suggestion that any chapter can be read separately if this is a topic that interests you. Also agree with your comments about the author being biased because of his profession. Great job.

Thanks for the great review. You did a comprehensive job of evaluating the book. Well done. I also felt the author's bias, pretty strongly - especially in the areas of GMOs and alternative medicine. I felt like a contemporary medical professional would have the confidence to make some room for the wealth of scientific research that exists on alternative medicine. Great job on the review.
