The book Health Tips, Myths and Rips, A Physician’s Advice, written by Doctor Morton E. Tavel, lends itself to being a health manual or guidebook. The introductory phrase in it, “Health information to liberate us from “Snake Oil” is catchy in that it makes one curious, a motivation to read the book considering the much publicized health benefits of snake oil.

The rich medical profile of the writer, Doctor Morton E. Tavel, being a specialist in internal medicines and cardiovascular disease, also having been a lecturer and consulting cardiologist would make one take the views he presents in the book as credible. He has also presented numerous speeches before audiences and published his research in more than 120 write-ups which have been peer-reviewed, adding credibility to the facts presented in this book.

I have appreciated the way Doctor Tavel has presented the material in this book. He has not simply written cold facts, but in every chapter, his points and views have been backed up with statistics, calculations and references. For example, in Chapter 1, discussing how to reduce on calories, under the subheading, ‘Best Means to Reduce,’ the Doctor presents an analysis of 48 diets as presented by the American Medical Association Journal, showing that his view is not simply personal but has the backing of the Medical Association and proven findings.

In some instances though, I find some of his views and what he calls myths debatable, especially when he talks about certain herbs and alternative medicines and cures. I believe some natural herbs that Doctor Tavel claims are not helpful actually do work. In those instances, I want to believe the reader needs to make a personal decision as to whether or not to go by Doctor Tavel’s guidelines or trash alternative medicines altogether.

The punctuation in the book by and large is fine, except in Chapter 14 where I thought this error stands out: The first sentence, “As I have noted in chapter 13, the sodium we eat, mainly in the form of salt is a major cause of high blood pressure With this background ...” Those two sentences are not separated by a full stop. The layout of the book also does not look very neat. I really hope the author of the book will consider giving the book a clean format. I would give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars.

Despite the few misgivings I have regarding the book, I really think it is a very handy tool for everyone who is concerned about their health. It gives a lot of insight into some of the conditions we do not really understand and how to handle them. I would recommend this book as a must have reference book for when we need a solution to a human health problem. I would also recommend for it to even just be read through for one to gain an understanding of certain functions of the human body and how it reacts to certain conditions.
