[Following is a volunteer review of "Come What May" by Marie Fostino.]
Come What May by Marie Fostino
This short, emotional memoir is about a strong woman named Rose. The story commences in an ambulance with Rose feeling distraught over her husband, Tony, who had a heart attack and is fighting for his life. Then, as she waits in the hospital room while Tony is in surgery, she reminisces about their fifty years of marriage. She feels sentimental and nostalgic as she recalls the memories of her married life. She reflects on her love, kids, family, and friends. She elucidates how her forgiveness towards others and trust in God transformed and guided her life.
The story travels to and fro between the past and the present. It's a short book, but the author skillfully portrays the ups and downs of Rose and Tony's married life. It is quite a quick read, packed with compelling truths and powerful words. I can resonate with the author in many places in the book. She accurately states that life moves very fast, and we almost forget things from the past. She also talks about how life will be with children, which is spot on. I completely agree with her that we must always be open to change in our lives. It is a funny truth that the littlest thing can upset a woman, while a man can't understand what he did. She emphasizes that when you really love a person, it is easy to forgive.
The author predominantly conveys the message about the power of forgiveness and how it leads us to a peaceful life. We can overcome any problem with faith in God and forgiving nature.
Many verses from the Bible are present in the book. Even though I am a non-Christian, the values imparted by the verses strike a chord with me.
When Tony breaks Rose's trust, some people might not agree with Rose's decision in her marriage, but I concurred with her. I believe Rose's love is pure, and she handled the situation well. She followed her heart and made a good decision. I have witnessed such situations in real life. We should strive to understand and forgive more, as our world needs more of that. There are many lessons to be learned from this memoir that we can apply to our own lives.
The story had no lagging and was gripping from start to finish. I loved the title of the book, and it grabbed me immediately. I noticed only one error. Other than that, the editing is incredible. I didn't dislike anything in this book, so I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
