'Puffy and the Formidal Foe' is a fiction children's book that is written by Marie G. Lepkowski, Ann M. Hannon and Margaret B. Hannon. It is written in a light and funny manner which makes it a great story not only for bedtime but for all occasions where you'd like to have a relaxing, bonding moment with your child.
The story is about a cat called Puffy. Puffy is a wonderfully curious creature who wanders off to explore the forest. While doing so she encounters some unexpected guests, and adventures.
In my opinion this book is especially suitable for age two to eight years old, depending on the social and emotional development of the specific child. The story easily flows due to short sentences and a rhyming structure which both my five and ten year old enjoyed. The choice of (humorous) words used particularly delighted my five year old daughter.
The book, 'Puffy and the Formidable Foe', is illustrated in a creative way which easily matches the imaginary world of a child. Its illustrations are colorful and resemble a real life drawing. Also, there's an extra sheet added with a coloring option which my daughter appreciated. The extra sheet provides an additional moment where you can evaluate the book and the lesson it provides.
The story of Puffy provides a lesson that can be interpreted in multiple ways. Puffy encounters some unfortunate adventures when wandering off from home. The obvious lesson provided here would be that wandering too far from home can be dangerous, and that there is no place like the safe haven that we call home. However, from my personal point of view I would encourage my children to wander off and go on adventures. I would like to teach them to embrace all new experiences positive and negative, and never be afraid of the unknown. I believe, in a modern society, where travel is becoming such substantial part of living, this lesson that Puffy provided is slightly outdated. However, it also teaches that home is a place you can always come back to. A secure place where you can can feel protected and secure.
If you are looking for an interactive read, but don't know where to start, this book is a good choice. The authors also hand tips on how to get the most out of your reading experience, and how to keep your child engaged in reading the story of Puffy. On request there's also a free list available of the big words in the book to encourage a rich vocabulary
Overall I enjoyed reading this book to, and with my children. I would recommend it to teachers and people who want to encourage interactive reading, and learning big words. However, I would be somewhat critical about the message provided. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
