[Following is a volunteer review of "The Magician's Secret" by Charles Townsend.]
Delvin is the main character in the book "The Magician's Secret" by Charles Townsend, an intriguing fictional work. "Murderer!... you have murdered him!..." a black figure shouted at Delvin accusingly as he held a chair leg, not knowing what was happening. The landlord is called, and Delvin, a suspect of murder, is arrested and locked up, awaiting trial.
During the trial by the elders, Delvin is found guilty of murdering his friend, the traveling magician Borlock, and is sentenced to death by hanging from a tree. Greg, Delvin's friend, is sent to get the rope that will be used to hang Delvin. Upon returning with the rope, he is instructed by the chief elder to tie a noose, which he has never done before. With help from Delvin, Greg ties a noose that later unravels, allowing Delvin to escape death. Just then, Borlock wakes up and explains that the guild of magicians had sent one of their own to kill him, not Delvin, and Borlock dies after handing his belongings to Delvin.
The incident at Byford prompts Delvin to leave town for Hengel, together with his friend Greg. In Hengel, Delvin becomes a magician, performing children's shows and telling fortunes, while Greg becomes a stable boy at the White Bear. In his fortune-telling using Borlock's crystal ball, a thought flashes in Delvin's mind, warning him to be aware of falling barrels. This incident of falling barrels occurs when the Prince and Princess are having a celebration, and Delvin starts to wonder if it was a coincidence that the thought of falling barrels came to him. The Duke of Hengel arrests Delvin for using his crystal ball to cast a spell on the guards and interfere with the celebration.
Later on, Princess Jarla helps Delvin escape from the prison where he is being held awaiting trial. Princess Jarla needed Delvin's help, and to get it, she needs to break him out. To know more about what happened, I suggest you read this interesting book.
Though the book is very interesting, it has some explicit words which I didn't like hence 4 out of 5 stars rating and can be read by anyone 16 years and older. The book was professionally edited
