The Devil Among Us by Jack Winnick is an exciting story that parallels some of the Geopolitical goings on that we are witnessing today across the Middle East. This is a very well written and fast paced story that I was able to follow easily with characters that were well developed so that I could relate to them.
I was a little worried that the characters Uri and Lara, having been seen in Jack’s last novel, would have too much history for me to step into but that was not the case. Uri and Lara are old friends and make a great team as they fight to protect both the U.S. and Israel. They are both smart and very well trained, just as you’d expect from FBI and Mossad Agents. With Uri being the Mossad Agent and Lara being the FBI agent, their culturally different points of view on the attacks and fighting and military maneuverings were super interesting and kept me engaged. I also really appreciated that they were written as equals. Neither of them was a better Agent, just different.
The portrayal of the American Government felt very realistic and current, with the divided factions and the pay to play agendas. The way the ruling parties of Iran, Syria and Egypt were explained was very interesting and really made think about how much religious dogma affects national ideals.
The only thing that could have made this better for me, would be to have some of the large battles be a little less detailed. Not knowing what some of the tanks and airplanes look like makes it difficult for me to picture in my head, thereby making it difficult to understand exactly what’s going on and to follow precisely.
Overall, this was a very believable and action-packed story that could happen in real life at any moment! I am excited to see what Uri and Lara take on next!
