[Following is a volunteer review of "The Hero of Hawk's Nest Beach: A Sea Turtle Rescue" by Barbara Gervais Ciancimino.]
The Hero of Hawk's Nest Beach: A Sea Turtle Rescue, written by Barbara Gervais Ciancimino, tells the story of two dog friends, Finn and Little Mutt. Finn and Little Mutt go to Hawk's Nest Beach every summer and do have a great time playing with the kids and chasing seagulls. They are even fortunate enough to grab some hot dog crumbs!
Now, there is a problem this particular summertime at Hawk's Nest Beach, and surprisingly, Finn volunteers himself to help the distraught girl in question get back her item, having to his advantage the ability to locate things on the ocean floor. How did this item get into the water, and will Finn's ability actually help him find the lost item? While on this, Finn runs into a sea turtle seriously in need of help. Her name is Olive. Will Finn be willing to inconvenience himself more to give this poor creature another chance at living?
The major character here is Finn, and he is faced with an inner struggle. What I found remarkably fascinating is Barbara's style of connecting Finn's redemption (evolution, enlightenment, growth in worldviews, fulfillment) to his involvement in good deeds. I think this is a great way of teaching children that, in practicality, we are the greatest beneficiaries of every act of kindness, which is helpful for redefining our perception of these acts and removing or reducing the constraints of reluctance and grumbling.
Apart from the lessons on compassion, kindness, personal development, and reward for good deeds, the story also brings to our attention the issue of endangered animals and the priceless jobs the rescue team does to save animals in danger and get them back to their natural habitat in sound health. Moreso, the story began on very impressive ground, giving a vivid description of the scene and the activities going on. This readily got me interested in following the unfolding incidents.
The storyline is seamless and is well complemented with colorful illustrations that perfectly give visual interpretations of the concerned scenes. Also, the text is exceptionally well edited. Given the aforementioned merits, I give The Hero of Hawk's Nest Beach: A Sea Turtle Rescue 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to every child. I didn't dislike anything in this book.
