The Dancing Barber by AC Michael is a real fun read, with a very well written story line. When I started reading it, I thought it has to do with the Christian faith and since I don't belong to this faith, I this might not be the book for me. But as I progressed, I figured it wasn't entirely what I thought it was.
The book addresses important issues concerning the famine in Ukraine, it revolves around the lives of Ukrainian immigrants who settle in a town in England. Following what happened in the 1930's when the Soviet destroyed the farmlands of Ukraine and it was hit by a devastating famine. The story then goes onto the plot where the characters seek revenge and attempt to restore their lives, looking for someone who can help them achieve independence and punish the Holodomors.
But, what makes the story line interesting is, how the author made it seem serious and humorous at the same time. The characters come across great, everyone having their own story and role. My favourite character was Haylna. She was a strong and independent woman- who helped another character Klem- fight for freedom. Haylna was the wife of a barber named Taras who was the complete opposite of her- a very lazy, arrogant and selfish person. The author tells us how Haylna stands up for herself against her husband when he tries to bully her. This is something many women, and in some cases men, in our society need to learn and not just silently bear the abuses by their partners. There are several other characters like Haylna’s daughter and sisters, who add the spices to the story. All characters taught me something that I would retain for life.
Although, the book talks about the historical times- around the 1930's and 60’s- it is quite relatable today as well! It has history, humour, mystery, thrill, suspense- everything stirred up in the best possible way!
The book surely is huge, but once you start reading it, it is so hard to stop that you just end up finishing it! I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because it isn’t just a great read, it is quite informative too- enhancing the readers knowledge and providing a good moral. I hardly found any severe grammatical mistakes, however, I did learn quite a few new words that added to my vocabulary! I would highly recommend this book to everyone, be it the book lovers or non-book lovers.
