Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign is a young adult book with a blend of fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and romance. This is the first book in the Scion Saga series. The story revolves around two main characters, Adam and Carly, who possess supernatural abilities and are referred to as "Descendants." These Descendants, originating from seven Russian families, have a unique genetic makeup, with more sets of chromosomes than regular humans. Their ancestors were hunted and captured by a group of Russian scientists known as 'Iksha'. These scientists discovered a rare genetic mutation in the Descendants' DNA, which granted them the power to control and manipulate matter. Their ultimate goal is to harness these abilities for themselves. As a result, Adam and Carly find themselves in a constant battle to protect their clans from these relentless pursuers. This leads to the question: why do these powerful Descendants have to flee from mere scientists?

The narrative is captivating, and the characters are well-developed. My favorite character in this book was Dauma, Carly's mother. The bond between Adam and Carly is also heartwarming; their care for each other is portrayed beautifully. Initially, I had concerns about Adam's feelings towards his mother, but I was relieved when the author addressed this issue later in the story, providing further clarification. However, I felt that the incident related to Terry was not adequately addressed in the book, which seemed unjustified to me. Additionally, I noticed that English translations for the Russian dialogues were missing in certain parts of the book. Despite these minor issues, they didn't significantly detract from my overall reading experience. The book is impeccably edited and well-crafted, and I enjoyed reading this book, which is why I rate it 5 out of 5.

As the first book in the Scion saga series, "Opaque" serves as a captivating introduction to the storyline, setting the stage for more exciting adventures to come. I eagerly anticipate reading the next book in this series, expecting it to delve deeper into the Descendants' world and challenges. Readers who enjoy fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and romance will surely enjoy reading this book.
